Not Your Usual 5 star Hotel
By admin | December 15, 2007
5-star, world-class resorts, modern casinos, 6-star hotels, been there, done that, so you say. But I am sure you have not visited or stayed on places like jungles, caves, snow hotels or underwater suites. These are the other side of “hotel” that provides that same star-rated services and amenities plus a whole new world most have never imagined living in.
Located at the tree-top height and in the middle of Amazon rainforest of Brazil, the Ariau Amazon Towers is the only hotel of its kind. Dubbed by Newsweek magazine as the “5th Wonder of the Modern World”, this resort has 291 rooms and suites, 2 restaurants and swimming pools. It offers one-of-a-kind experience not available on your typical star hotels – alligator spotting, piranha fishing, jungle trekking and stopovers to indigenous villages.
The Desert Cave Hotel Coober Pedy offers a different approach to 4-star experience. Their residents stay at “underground homes”. The town of Coober Pedy in South Australia is famous for its locals living in “dugouts” or underground houses. It has 19 underground suites and 31 aboveground guestrooms. They have shops, cafes, bars and restaurants in the comfort of the natural sandstone surroundings.
Another famous cave hotel is the Cuevas Pedro Antonio de Alarcon located in Guadix, Spain. It offers caves that have been converted from primitive spaces to state-of-the-art lodging areas.
Snow hotels are also gaining popularity among tourists. Its furniture and decorations are all made of snow and ice. Examples of such places are the Mammut Snow Hotel in Finland, The Castle Courtyard and The Snow Restaurant.
The Library Hotel is notably exceptional because of its ten floors that are set based on the Dewey Decimal System with stories devoted to 10 key categories such as The Arts, Philosophy, Language and Literature. Each suite is ornamented with a collected works of art and books. Located in New York, USA it is intended to sense more like an exclusive club rather than a hotel.
The only hotel that has an undersea suite possible to be reached without SCUBA gear is the Utter Inn in Lake Malaren, Sweden. The city of Dubai in UAE is planning an ambitious venture in constructing a luxury hotel at the bottom of the Persian Gulf. It is suppose to have 220 suites all of which is 20 meters (66 feet) below the surface. This soon expedition is known as the “Hydropolis”.
