For travelers and other people who frequently stay in a hotel this rating system is not new. They already know what to expect from a 3-star hotel compared to a 5-star hotel. In several countries, the standard criteria for categorizing hotels are done by an authorized organization. There have been efforts aimed in unifying the hotel classification system in order for it to become internationally recognized. Apparently, vast differences exist within one class of hotel in terms of quality of accommodation, food, and various services.

The more stars a hotel has, the more amenities and facilities it offers. When staying in a 5-star or more hotels, any of your wish and desires, regardless of the food being served or the bed is not comfortable enough, is taken seriously by hotel personnel.

One to two-star hotels offer the basic like the bed, small couch, shower room, and a phone. Do not expect spas, fitness centers or extravagant resorts, they have none. Three to four-star hotels have more extravagant restaurants, additional and bigger suites, and more personal services such as a concierge, receptionist, elevator boy, etc.

Of course five-star and above hotels boast of premier resorts, world class casinos, fine-dine restaurant, sports areas, condominium complex, and more. Frequently, these types of hotels talk big of having something that other hotels do not have.
